We wanted to better understand the employment gap between disabled graduates and their non-disabled peers, and in particular the larger gap for graduates with sight loss, mobility impairments, autism, and two or more co-occurring conditions.听听

This qualitative study brings the voices of disabled graduates to the forefront. 听

We set out to understand how students鈥� career expectations are affected by their disability, how and why students choose to share information about their disability with employers, and what impact disability has on their transition into work. The research therefore focused on the initial career journey of disabled graduates in the UK, starting while they are still studying and moving through the job search, application, interview and negotiations process.听

We were pleased to collaborate on this qualitive research with inclusive research agency, Open Inclusion, who designed and conducted the research on our behalf.听听

We found that disabled graduates鈥� career journeys are shaped by their experiences as an individual, their support systems, and potential employers. This may relate to, but is not limited to, a graduate鈥檚:听

• personal and professional identity听
• recruitment experience with an employer听
• understanding of how they fit into an advertised role听
• ability to take part in a recruitment process听
• experience of University careers support听
• access to mentors and support networks.听

Alongside this, AGCAS has today launched the report, analysing 2020 and 2021 Graduate Outcomes data for disabled graduates. In this report, quantitative research shows that employment gap figures for the total number of disabled graduates have remained constant, and that disabled graduates are less likely to be in highly skilled, secure employment than graduates with no known disability.听

These complimentary reports share a holistic review of the employment journey for disabled graduates.听

While hopes were raised by an immediate uptick in enquiries, 香港六合彩图库大全鈥檚 Manager, Kathy Hamilton commented: 鈥淪igning up foster carers in 2023 has been a real challenge and there has been no increase in the numbers of people wanting to take on children. Sadly, the statistics this year from Ofsted show more foster carers have left fostering than have been recruited and more children are coming into care.鈥�听

Let鈥檚 look at the figures. At the end of March 2023, there were around 43,400 fostering households in England. This number has stayed reasonably stable for five years, but the types of fostering homes have changed. The number of households giving a friend or family member a foster home has increased by more than a fifth, with almost one in five children now living in family and friends鈥� households, or kinship care. But since 2019 the number of households offering children they don鈥檛 already know a home has fallen by 11%.听听

听

So, for many children there has been no John Lewis fairy magic, or new family to welcome them. And this year鈥檚 giant, gift-guzzling Venus flytrap seems just as realistic as a future where there are enough foster placements for children.听听

听

And yet, we know that for many foster carers it is a hugely rewarding and life-changing experience. Tracy, and her partner Simon are both foster carers with Fostering2Inspire. They said 鈥�When I became a foster carer, I was just expecting to help a child in need. Not in a million years did I expect to meet young people that would take my breath away.听听

But – in Somerset our partnership led by Somerset Council and the NHS in Somerset is driving a new approach to support the county鈥檚 most complex looked-after children. An approach that is child-centred, trauma-informed, delivering results and saving the taxpayers money.听

We have collaborated with Somerset Council and the NHS to reimagine systems and processes from a child鈥檚 point of view ensuring their home life, health and education are integrated 鈥� removing the financially and emotionally costly short-term approach to placements. Providing stability for our children.听听

We are now entering year two of our ten-year partnership, and we have successfully opened five homes for children with a further two in progress, recruited high needs foster carers and a specialist education team.听听

听

And at a time of spiralling costs, we have saved the residents of Somerset 拢2.1m in health, education and placement costs in year two alone.听听

But it is the long-term benefits to children鈥檚 lives, now and in the future, that will determine whether this project is a success. We know how challenging early experiences impact people鈥檚 entire lives 鈥� whether because they turn away from education, lack a trusted adult presence or lose their sense of worth.听

Supporting our most complex and vulnerable young people shouldn鈥檛 only make headlines because of the costs of providing placements. It should offer children a future so they become the adults they have the potential to be.听听

There are 16million disabled people in the UK, according to the DWP. The disability employment rate was 53.6% in Q2 2023, compared to 82.5% for non-disabled people.听

Yet 6 in 10 graduates with a visual impairment are not in full-time employment, and only 1 in 3 autistic graduates is in work.听听

And yet, studies show when disabled people are recruited for the right job and are given responsibility, they often outperform other employees, with higher levels of efficiency, productivity, accurateness, commitment, loyalty, and satisfaction. But for many disabled people there are challenges when staying in work such as accessing reasonable adjustments and the Access to Work scheme.听听

Employers can do much to support their disabled employees to ensure they do not face a culture of negative attitudes and discrimination, but are offered work patterns that provide two way flexibility and human-centric sick pay and return to work process issues. Interestingly, government research shows disabled employees are more likely to be working for small employers and less likely to be working for a large employer.听听

How do we breach this divide? It may sound like a complex one to crack, but the solutions are shockingly simple, provided there is the will to implement them.听听

Getting recruitment right听

To streamline processes recruiters have pushed recruitment online 鈥� but unless you have tested your online application for accessibility it is highly likely this, like screening apps that gameify the initial assessment, will be inaccessible. We know when we use algorithms to determine success or failure we miss nuance and devalue the additional skills needed to be successful in a role.听

And disabled employees bring additional skills honed by negotiating an inaccessible world. The necessity to project manage every journey, react and adapt when plans change, know when 鈥� and how 鈥� to ask for support.听听

As employers, organisations and businesses we need to look at our practices if we want to encourage talent to join us. We cannot assume a disabled candidate won鈥檛 be the right fit 鈥� we must look at how we ensure everyone can contribute. Make our recruitment processes open to all by ensuring online processes are accessibility tested and, most importantly, ask 鈥榃hat can we do to help you do this job well?鈥櫶�听

The peer group members in Somerset have been active collaborators with Homes and Horizons from the start and were fundamental in the decision to select Homes2Inspire for the partnership. They took part by devising questions for prospective partners; scoring and interviewing applications; visiting children鈥檚 homes across the UK to interview staff and residents; representing young people on the steering group for the project; presenting at the 香港六合彩图库大全 Board鈥檚 AGM; choosing furniture and helping with community engagement when the homes open; they even chose the name of the project.听

鈥�This has resulted in the service design being based on lived experience of care experienced young people; staff involved having a greater understanding of that lived experience; and earlier this year attended when the partnership won the prestigious MJ Award for Innovation in Partnership.听

鈥�Members of the group have also reaped benefits from their involvement. They have formed closer bonds with one another, especially from all the travelling around the UK; developed better presentation and negotiation skills and grown their sense of self-worth, agency and confidence; and they鈥檝e moved the dial between how services are commissioned and procured to ensure their voices and experiences are heard.听听

鈥�One young person who attended the award event commented: 鈥淗onestly, I had the most amazing day, it was really eye opening to not only be able to share our voices, opinions and experiences but also to hear those of others.鈥�听

But so what?

Around 60% of 香港六合彩图库大全 employees are female; and at any one time we think 800 of our colleagues could be experiencing menopause and perimenopause. That鈥檚 a lot of women 鈥� and for every woman finding it entirely manageable, others will be finding their symptoms affect how they feel and perform. As a large organisation it鈥檚 important to us that we offer support and also let everyone 鈥� male and female 鈥� know it鈥檚 okay to not be okay all of the time.

When we come to work we all want to feel we are part of something, that we belong. But when women experience menopause symptoms it can mean they keep part of themselves hidden or even leave a job they love. Ten percent of women leave work during menopause 鈥� taking with them their experience and expertise. By listening to our teams we realised we needed, a major employer, to be part of a wider, national conversation about menopause, to help breakdown taboos.

We opted to become a Menopause Friendly Employer before working towards gaining the Menopause Friendly Accreditation. The award set high standards and we had to prove we had embraced menopause in the workplace. We were assessed by an independent panel and demonstrated our effectiveness in six key areas, namely: culture, policies and practices, training, engagement, facilities and evaluation.

We were delighted we could show how we鈥檙e creating a culture where colleagues can have open discussions about menopause, either through our vibrant menopause peer support group or with their teams and managers. What was important was being able to create spaces where colleagues could come together.

Speaking about our achievement, Head of Diversity and Inclusion, Michelle Jackson said: 鈥淎t 香港六合彩图库大全 we are incredibly proud of the work we do to ensure our workspaces are inclusive. Addressing menopause head on, and ensuring women, their partners, families, colleagues and teams have the tools and support they need to get on with life, and continue to enjoy work, is incredibly satisfying. We know when it comes to the relationship between unemployment and mental health, it can be a vicious cycle. Good mental health is vital to get and stay in work and work is a key driver for good health and wellbeing. Understanding this helps us enable people to take control of their overall wellbeing. And we do this through programmes supporting employees and unemployed people in London, the Midlands and across the southeast. 听

One recent programme,听the Refugee Employability Programme (REP), is supporting refugees 鈥� who have a 20% lower employment rate compared with the general UK population. We help refugees living in several London boroughs who have arrived in the UK through safe and legal channels, to find and retain work. 听

With 1 in 3 mental health problems in adulthood being directly connected to an adverse childhood experience, it is incredibly important to ensure the young people we work with have access to help and support whenever they need it.听听

Optimus Education, part of 香港六合彩图库大全, works with over 5000 schools in 53 countries raising standards in education with online CPD training, conferences, awards and guidance based around mental health and wellbeing. An evaluation of the 1,000+ schools that were enrolled on the Wellbeing Award in 2022 revealed that 93% agreed it had improved staff wellbeing and 93% agreed it had a large or medium impact on parent wellbeing.听
